Begin hair dryer cleaning by unplugging it and allowing it to cool completely. Then check the housing, air inlet and outlet, nozzle and cord separately. This routine concerns parts accessible to the user. Opening the motor housing or repairing the heating element or cable is not part of routine home cleaning.
Before cleaning: switch off, unplug and cool
Switching off does not replace unplugging. Keep the dryer in a dry place away from water, and allow it to cool before handling parts. The CPSC hair dryer safety guidance also advises unplugging after use and keeping the appliance away from water. For handling individual parts, use the instructions for your exact model.
The Swiss Plus HD-990 hair dryer lists three heat levels, two speeds, cool air, an AC motor, 2200 W power and two attachments. Those specifications do not establish how to open the inlet cover or whether a component may be washed. A photograph of the grille is not proof that it is removable.

A practical care checklist
Part | What to check | Scope of routine care |
|---|---|---|
Housing and handle | Surface marks, cracks or deformation | Clean by the approved method and prevent liquid entering |
Air inlet | Visible lint or dust | Clean accessible surfaces as directed; do not force the grille open |
Outlet and nozzle | Visible obstruction or incorrect fitting | Remove the attachment only after cooling and as instructed |
Cord and connection | Crushing, cuts or sharp bends | Inspect visually; stop using a damaged cable |
Storage space | Moisture, pressure on the cord or covering a hot dryer | Store in a dry place after complete cooling |
An air inlet is not automatically a washable part
If lint is visible at the inlet, first find the recommended cleaning method for that area. Do not open a grille or cover with a screwdriver, force or a guessed twisting motion. Do not push a cloth or tool into the housing, and do not spray liquid or cleaner into the inlet. Unless the instructions explicitly allow washing a particular component, do not put it under running water.
Plan checks around actual use and visible buildup rather than assuming one fixed interval suits every home. During use, keep the inlet and outlet clear of your hand, fabric and nearby objects. If airflow changes from its usual pattern, stop and check the permitted areas instead of continuing at a higher heat setting.
Prepare the nozzle and cord for storage
Do not remove or reposition a hot attachment. After cooling, use the specified connection method if removal is permitted. Before the next session, check that the attachment is clean and properly fitted. A nozzle from a different model is not necessarily compatible simply because its opening looks similar.
When putting the cord away, avoid pulling the plug by its cable or making a sharp bend next to the handle. Store the cooled, unplugged dryer in a dry place. Keep the cord out from under heavy objects and away from door or drawer edges. If the insulation is damaged, covering it with tape is not a substitute for professional repair.
Which changes need a service assessment?
Do not test a new noise, unusual smell, repeated interruption, distorted housing or damaged cable by turning up the heat or speed. Stop using the appliance and prepare the HD-990 model code, symptom description and active setting for after-sales service support. The published specifications do not justify guessing a continuous runtime, repair procedure or an unlisted protective mechanism.
To understand the controls, read the hair dryer buying guide. Current specifications and photographs are available in the Swiss Plus hair dryer category. Before obtaining another nozzle, review the model and accessory compatibility guide.
