Do not begin a first espresso-machine session by putting coffee into the basket. Prepare the location, removable parts, tank and controls, then complete the initial water-circuit procedure required for that model. This order helps reveal a fitting or preparation problem before grind size, coffee quantity and tamping become additional variables.
Identify the SEM-2220S by its code and controls
The SEM-2220S espresso machine lists an Italian ULKA pump rated at 20 bar, a removable 1.5-litre tank, mechanical switches, an analog thermometer, adjustable steam, a stainless steel filter and a removable drip tray. Distinguish it from the touch-control SEM-2230DS. Read the sequence and readiness indications for the model actually supplied.

SEM-2220S from the current Swiss Plus gallery. The display cup is not a serving-size or extraction-time instruction.
Before powering on, identify the power control, coffee and steam controls, and steam dial in the instructions. Look at the analog gauge as well, without using its pointer position alone to infer the temperature inside the cup or readiness of every component. The specified indications and sequence for the selected operating mode matter.
Prepare the workspace and initial components
Choose a dry, level and stable surface suited to the appliance weight and heat. Allow room to reach the tank, remove the tray and access the steam wand safely. Keep the cable and plug away from water and hot surfaces. Match protective packaging and parts to the supplied list and inspect the cable, tank and handle before connecting power.
Clean removable containers or parts before use only by their permitted methods and refit them correctly. Do not immerse the electrical body. Identify the filter basket and portafilter rather than treating every similar part from another model as compatible. An exact model code is needed when obtaining replacements.
A checklist before the first extraction
Area | Initial check | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
Location and power | Stable surface, dry access and intact cable | That electrical components may contact water |
Tank | Permitted water, level limit and correct fitting | That nominal capacity permits filling to the brim |
Basket and portafilter | Compatible parts and the proper fitting and locking method | A fixed coffee dose from basket appearance |
Water circuit | Initial set-up sequence from the instructions | An arbitrary pump runtime or skipping preparation |
Controls | Coffee and steam modes and readiness indications | Identical switch functions across different models |
Fill the tank and prepare the water circuit
With the appliance off and unplugged, remove or access the tank as instructed. Follow the permitted water type and level limit for this model and seat the tank correctly. A 1.5-litre volume does not establish a fixed cup count. Preparation and cleaning also use water during the routine.
For first use, follow the required initial rinsing, preparation or priming sequence in the relevant instructions and tutorial. Match the switch positions, receiving container and stopping method to that procedure. Do not repeatedly run the machine with an empty tank or when the expected flow fails to appear, and do not invent a pump operating duration.
SEM-2220S introduction and operating tutorial
The following site video is linked to this product. Watch it before adding coffee to understand the controls and check any appliance-version differences against the supplied instructions. A touch-panel tutorial or a priming procedure for a different model does not replace guidance for this code.
Once ready, make the first comparison repeatable
When the initial procedure finishes normally, select an approved basket and coffee suited to it. Record the coffee type, input and output quantities and preparation method for the next comparison. Take basket limits and operating-time restrictions from the instructions. If everything changes together, it becomes difficult to identify why the result differed. A generic recipe cannot guarantee the same outcome for every coffee.
After use, follow the required stopping and pressure-release procedure and do not remove the portafilter until conditions are safe. Clean the tray and permitted components after cooling by their specified methods. If leakage, damage or abnormal flow appears, stop and make the appliance safe before inspecting tank fitting. Refer a persistent problem to service support.
