A concentrator nozzle directs a hair dryer’s airflow toward a smaller area, helping you work on the section controlled by your brush. Begin with correct fitting, manageable sections and familiar controls, then coordinate airflow direction with the brush movement. Pressing the outlet against the hair or repeatedly increasing heat does not replace that coordination.
What is actually listed for the HD-990?
The HD-990 hair dryer lists three heat settings, two speeds, cool air, an AC motor, 2,200-watt power and two attachments. The current gallery shows a narrow outlet fitted to the appliance. Match the purpose, connection method and differences of both attachments to the supplied items and exact instructions. Attachment count alone does not establish a diffuser or a particular connection system.

Establish fitting and direction before starting
With the dryer switched off, unplugged and cool, inspect the attachment and connection area. Fit it by the permitted method and check that it is seated correctly. Do not force or twist an incompatible component into place. Resolve compatibility and condition before using a loose, cracked or distorted nozzle.
Prepare a clear cord route and a suitable place to set the appliance down, away from water. Keep hands and hair from covering the air intake while holding the handle. If changing outlet direction or attachments requires adjustment at the connection, switch off, unplug and allow cooling before using the permitted method. Do not handle a hot nozzle.
Coordinate sectioning with the brush movement
Check the starting hair conditions required by the appliance and any products you use. Divide hair into sections that let you control the brush path and airflow together. A very large section makes the result harder to follow. Do not compensate for tangles or pulling by increasing heat. Stop and prepare the section first if control of the hair and appliance is lost.
Direct the airflow toward the working section and brush path, keeping movement continuous. The official Philips dryer-attachment guidance also describes aiming concentrator airflow toward the brush. This general principle is not a universal fitting or settings instruction. Do not press the outlet against the brush or hair; obtain HD-990 clearance requirements from its own guide.
Common airflow-direction mistakes
Observation | Check first | Adjust the routine |
|---|---|---|
Surrounding hair is being displaced | Section size and outlet direction | Use a manageable section and clearer airflow path |
Outlet stays close to hair or brush | Clearance and coordination of both hands | Maintain permitted clearance and continuous movement |
Heat stays on one spot | A stationary hand and heat selection | Stop concentrating heat and review the method |
Nozzle is loose or its direction uncertain | Fitting, condition and part compatibility | Stop, unplug and inspect after cooling |
Hand covers the air intake | How the appliance is being held | Correct the grip while leaving airflow clear |
Sections produce different results | Section size, initial condition and settings | Compare similar sections while changing one factor |
Heat, speed and cool air are separate choices
Choose heat and airflow speed according to the model instructions and stage of work. If air moves the hair away from the brush path, review section size and direction before increasing heat. Recording the settings on a comparable section is clearer than changing several controls together. There is no single numerical temperature, distance or duration to prescribe for everyone.
Cool air is listed for the HD-990. Check the activation method and appropriate stage in its guide. This feature does not permit pressing the nozzle against hair or continuing with incorrect fitting. Ionic and tourmaline descriptions do not guarantee a fixed outcome or protection under every method of use.
Finish carefully and make the next comparison useful
After use, switch off, unplug and place the dryer and attachment appropriately until cool. Do not leave the cord under tension or wind it tightly around a warm housing. Inspect the outlet and connection before storing the attachment. Follow the specified air-intake cleaning method; see the dryer air-intake care guide for that separate task.
For the next comparison, record section size, starting hair condition, attachment and settings. Stop for discomfort from heat, unusual sound, cord damage or abnormal operation. Provide support with the HD-990 model code and the stage where the issue occurred. A styling outcome alone is not a conclusive technical diagnosis.
For appliance selection, see the hair dryer buying guide and hair dryer category. Confirm exact procedures through the product manual section or a service centre.
